On Sunday, 18 Lambrook Pupils, armed with bikes, helmets, tri-suits and trainers, travelled to Monkton Prep School for the IAPS Triathlon National Finals.

“The Lambrook squad should be incredibly proud of their achievements, for stepping out of their comfort zones and for giving it their all!” Director of Sport

Situated between Bath and the Somerset countryside, the setting of the Prep School was beautiful and with the addition of some sunshine, it was even more stunning.

On arrival, Pupils registered, checked out the ice cream van for later, were briefed and then got ready for their 3 stage event. Pupils competed in Year Groups, with the length of each section varying depending on age:

Year Group  Swim Distance  Cycle Distance  Run Distance
Year 5 150m 2000m 1200m
Year 6 200m 4000m 1800m
Year 7 200m 4000m 1800m
Year 8 300m 6000m 2400m

“We all wore a chip on our ankles so that our exact time for each section was recorded.” Year 7 Pupil

Pupils were set off one at a time and moved from one discipline to the next, whilst trying to keep their transition time between each section as short as possible.

“Some say that the hardest aspect of a triathlon is the transitions; running between the sections and having to put on trainers and a helmet, whilst wet, getting on and off a bike rapidly and doing it all as fast as possible. Most of the Lambrook pupils had taken part in our Biathlon, but the addition of a bike, added another complexity for them.” Head of Boys’ Games

The children all put in a mammoth amount of effort at each stage. For most of them, this was the first triathlon that they had ever taken part in but they all completed their races brilliantly. One Year 8 pupil took sixth position in his age group, with another Year 8 finishing second in the Girls’ field.

Further down the Year Groups, there were no podium positions, but several came very close.

“I loved it! It was incredibly tough with lots of good individuals from other schools. I was glad to get to the end!” Year 6 Pupil
